Artist statement
I tried several media as an artist, but I found that I express myself best through fabric.
I am inspired by African and Haitian influences, including the color and vibrancy from my childhood home, Haiti. I love the Caribbean flora and bright skies. Thus, my pieces contain much color and symbolism related to my upbringing.
As a physician, I find that making quilts connects the many facets of my life as a scientist and artist. Long considered women’s work, there is a feminine aesthetic to textile art. For me, my art balances the demands of medicine. I don’t do a lot of precise quilting because I do that in my work life; when I do my creative work, I try not to replicate my scientific tasks. I often adopt a stream-of-consciousness approach, letting the fabric “speak” to me. When I quilt, I am able to leave the world of science in order to discover new worlds of color and texture.
