When I grew up in Haiti, my grandmother and my mother used to roast coffee beans on a fire in the yard. Then, the coffee was ground in a large wooden pestle. I still remember the smell in the yard and the taste of the first cup of coffee made from a fresh bash of home roasted coffee.
